Mandy Nelson knew there had to be a better way. After spending an entire day and evening wrapping holiday gifts for family and friends, the ribbons had already become slack around the packages, making them look sloppy. Her eighteen month old daughter had been required to hold down the ribbon as Mandy wrapped each package, and, unsurprisingly, didn’t stick around to finish the job. Adding to it all, the flimsy ribbons had unraveled from their rolls and were now strewn all over Mandy’s living room. Exhausted and frustrated, Mandy vowed to create a ribbon that would take the mess, frustration, and sloppiness out of gift wrapping.
“I was so irritated after that day, that I just went to work on it right away,” said Mandy. “I decided a ribbon with a light adhesive backing would solve a lot of problems. Then I wanted to make the ribbon fun and decorative. Soon I had several designs, all with themes, like Halloween, Birthday, Wedding. I have used the prototypes in a wide range of projects, from wrapping, of course, to kids crafts, scrapbooking, and card making. Now I’m not dreading the holiday season because I will easily be able to wrap gifts without help, without mess, and without frustration.”
Self Stick Ribbon officially launched out of Mandy’s Oregon home in the fall of 2006. Her husband Joe, a carpenter, happened to be building a custom home and was chatting with the future owner when he mentioned his wife’s new venture. It turned out that the homeowner had manufacturing plants in California that ran labels for major corporations, and with some minor modifications, could also print the ribbon Joe was describing.
Soon, conversations began and agreements were reached. An initial order of 40,000 ribbon was made, and Self Stick Ribbon was officially in business.
